Influence of Soil Temperature on Meloidogyne incognita Resistant and Susceptible Cotton, Gossypium hirsutum

Auburn 623 (resistant), Clevewilt 6-3-5 (moderately resistant) and Deltapine 16 (susceptible) were inoculated in a pot experiment and exposed to temperatures ranging from 20 to 35 deg C. At 35 deg C, the number of nematodes in resistant and moderately resistant roots was greater than, or equal to, the number in susceptible roots at 20, 25 or 30 deg C. The resistant and moderately resistant cultivars did not allow maturation of the nematode until 35 deg C. It is suggested that the resistance mechanism is partially suppressed at this temperature, particularly in moderately resistant cultivars.
