Acute epistaxis associated with guttural pouch mycosis in two horses

Both cases reported were in 6-yr-old mares. Recurrent epistaxis over 10 weeks occurred in one and on necropsy a yellow-brown, plaque-like, pseudo-membrane 10 X 4 cm and 1 cm thick was found in the dorsal and lateral walls of the left guttural pouch. In the other mare a fatal epistaxis occurred 9 days after the first and in the left pouch a 2 cm diam. plaque overlaid the ruptured internal carotid artery. In both lesions hyphae characteristic of Aspergillus were seen.
