Six men 20 to 22 years old exercised on bicycle ergometer at work loads of 100, 150 or 200 watts. The subjects had no alcohol (control) or drank 45% alcohol, 1 ml/kg bodyweight about 30 to 35 min before exercise. All measurements were made before the subjects had their breakfast. Measured were oxygen consumption, minute CO2 production, cardiac output and arterial blood pressure. Alcohol decreased the elimination of non-metabolic CO2 and the mechanical work of the heart as well as the ratio of the latter to minute oxygen uptake. The effects were observed only at a low or moderate work load.
