Adult albino rats were fed to appetite on a basal diet or pair-fed on the basal diet with glucose to a third group on the basal diet with alcohol. Feed intake by the pair-fed groups was 12.1 and that of the control 14.3 g/rat. After 8 weeks 6 rats from each group were each given into the peritoneum 5 mu Ci glucose-U-14C; after 30 min expired CO2 was estimted and after 2 days the rats were killed and glycogen was estimated in liver and brain. Liver slices were incubated with the labelled glucose. Incorporation of glucose-U-14C into CO2 in vivo was least with the alcohol diet and greatest in the controls fed to appetite. Oxidation of glucose to CO2 by brain, liver and kidneys was least with alcohol which also gave the lowest value for the utilisation of glucose for glycogenesis by liver and brain. There was no difference between the 3 groups in glucose utilisation for fat synthesis.
