The intake of 3 ml 30% ethanol solution daily for 2 months caused an increase of from 74 to 80% in blood cholesterol in adult albino rats when compared with that of controls fed to appetite or pair-fed. On withdrawing alcohol, values fell to normal in 4 weeks. There was also a fall in serum albumin and an increase in free amino acids in serum of rats given ethanol indicating and impairment of protein metabolism. The livers of rats given ethanol had fatty infiltration. Rats given alcohol did not weigh more than their pair-fed controls.
