Wistar rats weighing initially 95 to 138 g were given a diet of casein 14, fat 26 and carbohydrate 60% as glucose (diet A) or 30% as glucose and 30% as galactose (diet B) or 30% as glucose and 30% as ethanol (diet C) or 30% as galactose and 30% as ethanol (diet D). There was no difference in bodyweight change among the groups on diets A, B and C; the group on diet D lost significantly more weight than the others. When the tests were made on rats without access to a cake containing a balanced mixture of minerals, unlike the rats in the previous tests, the death rate of group D rats was higher. Galactose and ethanol together increased hepatic concentration of galactose-1-phosphate and UDP-galactose and decreased the concentration ratios of ATP to ADP and of UDP-glucose to UDP-galactose.
