A total of 701 dogs submitted to veterinary hospitals in Tokyo and Yokohama were examined for leptospiral antibodies by the rapid microscopic agglutination test (RMAT), and 57 were found to be positive. The percentages of positives for dogs with an owner, and for strays are quoted, and the percentage responses to L. icterohaemorrhagiae and to L. canicola. A comparative study of the RMAT and the Schuffner Mochtar (SM) tests was made on 105 blood samples from stray dogs. There was agreement between the two tests in 79 negative and 15 positive diagnoses, while six were positive by RMAT only, and five by SM only.
