One possible method to obtain reversible long-term contraception in the bitch is the s/c implantation of testosterone in capsules fabricated from silicone rubber and calculated to release different daily doses of testosterone. Thirteen bitches were kept in anoestrus for 420 to 840 days. In 7 bitches, the testosterone-containing implants were removed at the end of 420-480 days and the bitches resumed a normal oestrous cycle. Six bitches were bred, and they whelped and weaned normal puppies. A predictable, effective oestrus-inhibiting dose of testosterone was 759 mu g/4.5 kg of body weight per day. Androstenedione, at the dose levels used, was ineffective for inhibiting oestrus in the bitch.
