Chronologic development of streptococcic lymphadenitis in swine

Swine orally exposed to group E streptococci (GES) were killed between 1 hour and 13 days afterward to study the development of abscesses in the mandibular and parotid lymph nodes. At the 2nd hour, infiltrating leukocytes and streptococci, the later being coated with anti-GES fluoresceinoconjugated antibody, were observed in sections of the mandibular lymph nodes. At the 48th hour, discrete foci of neutrophilic leukocytes were seen in sections of the affected nodes. Early necrosis was evident in the centers of these foci at the 96th hour. By the 5th day, liquefaction of the central necrosis had occurred, and the foci of neutrophilic leukocytes were coalescing. Abscesses with a connective tissue capsule were observed at the 7th day. Infiltration by neutrophilic leukocytes was also observed in the tonsil between the 18th and 48th hours and then subsided.
