The association of neoplastic diseases and mycotoxins in the environment

Results of a survey of the mycological flora in the homes of patients suffering from neoplastic diseases and leukaemia showed that a significantly higher incidence of fungi with known oncogenetic properties was found in the 210 homes of people with clinical tumours than in the 170 homes of clinically healthy people. Penicillium meleagrinum was most frequent in the homes of patients, followed by Aspergillus flavus, Cladosporium herbarum, Rhizopus nigricans and Alternaria geophila. A. flavus was significantly more frequent in the dwellings of patients with proliferation of the lymphoreticular system [RMVM 7, 619, 3618; 8, 1370].
