Toxoplasmosis in the course of neoplastic diseases of haematopoietic and lymphatic system in children

Infection with Toxoplasma gondii was found in 17 of 90 children with neoplastic disease of the hematopoietic and lymphatic system. In children with lymphoblastic leukemia toxoplasmosis occurred most often during the 2nd or 3rd yr of treatment. In 2 children with malignant granulomatosis the infection with T. gondii coexisted since the onset of the disease causing diagnostic problems. In all children complement fixation reaction and indirect immunofluorescence reaction with toxoplasma antigens were performed and phagocytic activity of granulocytes, T and B lymphocytes count levels of IgA, IgG, IgM in peripheral blood were determined. In all patients a significant decrease in numbers of T and B lymphocytes and of monocytes was found. In 2 children the infection with T. gondii was accompanied by a low titer of specific antibodies.
