Dermatophilosis in a lamb

Coccoid and filamentous structures were seen in scrapings of crusts found under the wool of the dorsal surface of 4 lambs. As the crusts were removed the wool remained attached to them, leaving areas of pink, moist, nonsuppurating skin which were sensitive to touch. The epidermis was intact except for some shallow ulcerations. Acanthosis, spongiosis and intracellular oedema of squamous cells was seen, and superficial folliculitis was a prominent feature of the disease. Spidery colonies resembling actinomycete growth were seen after 18 h in 5% blood agar cultures of a centrifuged saline suspension of the crusts. The organism was identified as Dermatophilus congolensis.
