Histological examination of the grossly normal cerebrum from an ovine fetus, aborted near term, revealed a disseminated encephalitis particularly affecting the grey matter, with pervascular cuffing by lymphocytes and monocytes and also granulomatous lesions formed of glial cells, monocytes and histiocytes. Protozoal cysts, 15-25 mu m in diameter, were present in the neuropil. Other findings were granuloma-induced ependymal destruction, degenerative changes in neurones, areas of demyelination, and focal leukomalacia.
