Vaccination tests against bovine dermatophilosis in the southern region of Chad

Vaccines prepared from rough phase cultures of Dermatophilus congolensis were used for intradermal inoculation of Zebu cattle at 7 centres in an area of Chad in which a dermatophilosis outbreak in 1972 resulted in an estimated 30% mortality rate. No side effects were seen, and non-lyophilised vaccine protected all but 1.99% of the cattle infected, while 19.7% of cattle injected with lyophilised vaccine developed severe dermatophilosis. The results indicate that a vaccination programme would be worthwhile, but further research on lyophilisation is required.
