Immunologic reactions of filaria-free beagle sera to Dirofilaria antigen

The specificity of the indirect haemagglutination and immunodiffusion (Ouchterlony) methods for the serological diagnosis of Dirofilaria immitis in dogs was compared in Japan using 2 groups of 24 laboratory-bred dogs each. Group L, reared in conventional kennels, was Dirofilaria-free but uncertain as regards Toxocara; Group F reared in animal rooms, was free of helminths by blood, stool and autopsy examinations. The IHA test gave 91.6 and 54.2% positive reactions, respectively, for the 2 groups, whereas the immunodiffusion test was positive only for the positive control serum.
