The isolation is described of heterologous serum against human thymus cells for use in small doses to stimulate T-[thymus-derived]-lymphocyte activity (essential in antineoplastic immunity). Heterologous serum against brain tissue was obtained by immunizing rabbits with (adult) human cortical cells. Immune sera against human thymocytes were obtained by immunizing rabbits with human embryo thymus cells. The sera were absorbed on human embryo and mouse liver tissue or erythrocytes and tested on human embryo and mouse thymocytes. After absorption in mouse liver tissue and erythrocytes, the sera did not react with mouse thymocytes. At the given level of ontogenic development and of the 'antigenic state' of the human body, the thymus and liver cells have great antigenic similarity. At this stage, the absorption of immune sera on human embryo liver tissue sharply decreases the cytotoxicity of the immune sera for thymocytes. The absorption of sera against human brain tissue on human liver tissue practically removes their cytotoxicity for human thymocytes; during absorption on liver tissue of mice, some of the cytotoxicity is retained.
