Semen was collected from New Zealand rabbits of proven fertility and used, following immobilisation of the spermatozoa by chemical or physical means, to inseminate females pre-treated with 50 IU HCG. The results obtained indicated that some immobile rabbit spermatozoa are capable of respiratory and/or fertilising activity, and that sperm mobility may be a poor predictor of fertilising capacity. Broken spermatozoa were never capable of inducing fertilisation.s.
