Sulphonamides were ineffective in the treatment of pulmonary Nocardia asteroides infection in 1 recipient of a renal homotransplant and produced severe sensitivity reactions precluding their further use in another. Favourable antinocardial and clinical effects were achieved by treatment with erythromycin plus ampicillin in the latter and with minocycline in the former. After treatment cultures were negative, but both patients became ill again after being discharged. N. asteroides was isolated once more, and both patients eventually died.
