Pulmonary nocardiosis. Diagnostic and therapeutic problems in its treatment

A case of pulmonary infection with Nocardia asteroides in an elderly woman is reported. Initial treatment with sulphadiazine caused fever, rash and a rapid fall in the white blood count. Tetracycline and doxycycline monohydrate were also ineffective, but therapy with sulphisoxazole over 21 months led to improvement and the patient became symptom-free.
