All the animals in a herd of 240-280 head of dairy and fattening cattle, which had been affected for several years, were vaccinated on the mucosa of the respiratory and genital tracts with a live vaccine. Two doses 4-8 weeks apart were given in both the first and second years of vaccination, and a sngle dose in the third year. Improvements were noted in fertility, conception rate, intercalving interval and milk production. No more cases of catarrh of the upper respiratory tract of young cattle were seen. There were no abortions or cases of the disease in young calves after vaccination, and persistence of the vaccinal virus could not be demonstrated. It is recommended that, in a vaccination programme, all cattle be sprayed on the mucosa of the respiratory and genital tracts twice, with an interval of about 6 weeks, followed by a single dose in subsequent years; calves of vaccinated dams should not be vaccinated before 4 months of age.
