Phlebotomids were caught on two nights in August 1966 in a rectangular area of 14 ha in the Murgab valley in Turkmenia (Soviet Union). On the first night, 385 sticky papers rolled into tubes and placed in the entrances of 21 abandoned burrows of the great gerbil [Rhombomys opimus] yielded a total catch of 4873 flies. Six nights later, 389 sticky 'flags' placed 20 m apart over the whole area yielded 10 969. The predominant species of Phlebotomids caught were Sergentomyia arpaklensis (Perfil'ev), Phlebotomus caucasicus Marts., P. andrejevi shakirzyanova and P. papatasi (Scop.), and the others comprised S. clydei (Sinton), S. grekovi (Khodukin) and P. chinensis Newst.
