Values for beta -lipoproteins and cholesterol in serum were lower in 20 Egyptian infants with kwashiorkor than in 20 with marasmus in whom beta -lipoproteins were similar but cholesterol was significantly lower than in 22 well nourished infants. Hb values were reduced in all the malnourished infants. Serum protein values were lower than normal in the marasmic children and very significantly lower in kwashiorkor. More weight was lost in marasmus than in kwashiorkor but there was no difference in height deficit.Among the well nourished infants diarrhoea had no effect on beta -lipoproteins or cholesterol, but among the malnourished infants both values fell. Among marasmic infants without diarrhoea, but not in kwashiorkor, beta -lipoproteins and cholesterol approached normal.
