Advances in knowledge of the causes and effects of protein-calorie malnutrition have led to a greater awareness of the problem and in turn improved methods of prevention. The regular monitoring of the growth of the preschool child is a simple method of detecting early protein-calorie malnutrition. This can be facilitated by the issue of a growth card to be kept by the mother. Available government, local authority and voluntary aid schemes for prevention of malnutrition and practical methods of nutritional supplementation are outlined.
