Protein-calorie malnutrition

A review of the history, changing opinions, and the general failure of attempts to control protein calorie malnutrition is presented. Although food supplies are obviously critical in many parts of the world and the more limiting they are the more malnutrition can be expected, available information does not lead to the conclusion that increasing food production will wipe out protein calorie malnutrition. Many gaps in the knowledge about malnutrition and the role of protein and calories make evaluation of intervention programs essential.
