An optimal level of inorganic sulfate for the diet of a rat

The amount of added inorganic sulphate required by adult rats fed on semipurified diets was assessed by estimation of the percentage of a test dose of methionine-1-14C expired as 14CO2 in 3 h. Methionine-1-14C was selected for estimation of optimum amount of sulphate in the diet after it was shown that 3 times as much 14CO2 was expired from methionine-1-14C in 3 h as from cysteine-U-14C. On the assumption that as sulphate in the diet spared methionine the 14CO2 expired would decrease, the optimum amount of inorganic sulphate in the diet was 0.02%.
