Serum magnesium level in chronic alcoholics

The purpose of this study was determination of serum magnesium levels in chronic alcoholism and comparison of the obtained values with the results obtained in healthy controls. It was demonstrated that in the control group the mean level of Mg was 1.83 mEq/l and in 151 alcoholics treated in Czarny Bór the mean level of Mg was 1.605 mEq/l independently of treatment and coexistent diseases of internal organs. The difference was statistically significant. The differences in Mg level between various groups of patients classified according to age, duration of alcoholism and type of alcohol ingested were not significant, Similarly no difference was demonstrated in Mg level in patients with a history of past delirium tremens (4 cases) as compared with the remaining patients which may be explained among others by too small number of the cases in relation to the whole material.
