On the effect of food magnesium level on the activity of BASP, ALAT, ASAT and LD in pig serum

In 3 experiments, pigs had diets with from 0.02 to 0.31% Mg. Alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactic dehydrogenase were estimated in serum. At 0.31% Mg increased alkaline phosphatase. Diets low in Mg may increase alanine aminotransferase; an abrupt reduction in Mg increases alkaline phosphatase, lactic dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase, within a few days. It was shown that, in the early stages, leg weakness was not caused by disturbance of bone. Even on a diet considered adequate in Mg, signs of deficiency could arise. Damage to heart and liver caused by deficiency of Mg are discussed.
