Pigs were given semipurified or ordinary diets with magnesium 0.2 to 3.6 g/kg. When maintained at a constant amount, Mg in feed had little effect on serum Mg but changes in Mg in feed had a clear effect. Deprivation of feed reduced serum Mg values. Postabsorptive normal values in pigs were 0.80 to 0.96 mmol/litre. In Mg deficiency, serum Mg increased spontaneously indicating that serum Mg is not a reliable indicator of Mg status. Molar Mg:calcium was almost constant and independent of Mg in feed. The postabsorptive optimum was 0.33:1. Changes in feed Mg had a clear effect on Mg:Ca. A diet poor in Mg reduced serum potassium. Bone Mg was reduced in some pigs despite feed having more Mg than ARC and NRC requirements.
