Treatment of Notoedres cati infestation in cats with selamectin

The efficacy of selamectin for the treatment of naturally acquired Notoedres cati infestation in cats was evaluated. A total of 17 domestic cats were presented with a history of intense pruritus and epidermal lesions. N. cati were identified microscopically in skin scrapings from all the cats. 14 of the cats received selamectin within the recommended dose range of 6.0-12.0 mg/kg. The cats were observed for general and local adverse reactions after treatment. On day 14, the pruritus had resolved, and skin scrapings were negative in all 17 cats. Moreover, lesions began to heal in all cases. On day 30, all the cats were free from pruritus and notoedric mange. Four months after the treatment, no clinical signs were observed in any of the animals. No significant adverse reactions were observed in any of the cats. None of the cats showed recurrence of infestation with N. cati. Based on the findings of this study, selamectin is an effective, practical and well-tolerated means of treatment for notoedric mange in cats.
