Eight sheep and 21 goats from near Pretoria, South Africa, were treated with praziquantel at 15 mg/kg body-weight (2 and 7 animals respectively) or oxfendazole at 3.5 mg/kg (2 and 7) or were left as untreated controls (4 and 7). At slaughter 2 weeks later, all the sheep except the 2 given praziquantel harboured Stilesia hepatica in the bile ducts, as did 4 of the goats given oxfendazole and one of the untreated goats. In a 2nd trial, sheep were treated, in groups of 20, with praziquantel at 15 or 7.5 mg/kg; another 22 sheep were untreated controls. At slaughter 15 to 61 days later, only 2 of the treated sheep (both given 7.5 mg/kg) harboured S. hepatica, compared with 20 of the controls.
