The effect of lactation on the absorption of 203 Pb and 47 Ca in rats

Nine lactating rats, 4 months old, each with a litter of 6, were given on the 15th day of lactation together with 9 control rats 4 mu Ci 47Ca and 14 mu Ci 203Pb by mouth. Excreta was collected for 5 days. Lactating rats with litters and control rats had whole body radioactivity from 203Pb 1.48 and 0.51, respectively, from 47Ca 11.0 and 10.2. The sum of whole body and urine taken as apparent absorption was 2.61 and 0.76, and 41.5 and 11.2% of the dose. As lactating rats eat about twice as much food as controls the actual increase in amount of stable or radioactive Pb absorbed from the diet was supposed to be about 7 times greater than in controls.
