The effects of dietary polyenoic fatty acids on superoxide anion production by peritoneal macrophages and on the phagocytosis by neutrophils were investigated in male Wistar rats after 3 months of feeding. Rats were fed isocaloric purified diet containing 24% fat (lard, sunflower oil and fish oil at a ratio of 49.0:6.1:1.1). Superoxide production and phagocytosis were increased after 3 months of feeding. The increased activity of mononuclear phagocytic system was confirmed by morphological investigation of peripheral lymphoid organs.
