The serum N-acetyl-.beta.-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) values in pregnant women rose progressivly during pregnancy and returned to the normal level on the 7th day in the puerperium. There was a significant correlation between maternal serum NAG values and fetal or placental weight. The mean value of serum NAG in toxemia of pregnancy was significantly higher than that in normal pregnancy at the same gestational age. There was a significant correlation between placental and maternal serum NAG values. The placenta is the source of this enzyme which appears in the serum of pregnant women. It is possible that the serum NAG values may reflect placental function.
