Male Wistar rats were given as a 20% solution intraperitoneal injections of 250 mg ethanol/100 g bodyweight or an isocaloric glucose solution. Blood ethanol was estimated at 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 180 and 300 min after injection and at each of those intervals blood, myocardium and liver samples were taken from some rats of each group. Blood glucose and lactate increased within 15 min of ethanol injection. They continued to increase until after 30 min, then decreased and after 60 min returned to control values. Within 30 min of ethanol injection unesterified fatty acids in blood rose but after 60 min had returned to control values. Myocardial glycogen increased 15 min after injection and continued to rise up to 30 min but returned to control values after 60 min. Liver glycogen fell 15 and 30 min after ethanol injection but after 60 min returned to control values. Within 2.5 min of injection ethanol reached peak values of 296.8 mg/100 ml in blood, 219 mg/100 g in liver and 189.5 mg/100 g im myocardium. Values decreased rapidly after reaching the peak. Five h after injection blood, liver and myocardium did not contain ethanol.
