The effect was studied of combined administration of phenylbutazone and ethanol on the cerebral cortical neurons in rats by electron microscopy. The results revealed a strong toxic action of phenylbutazone combined with ethanol. Feeding of ethanol alone induced slight changes in cortical neurons, phenylbutazone given alone affected the cortical neurons only slightly, but combined administration of both agents produced a strong toxic effect with severe damage to the cortical neurons including blurring (necrosis). Another observation was that the intake of phenylbutazone accelerated ethanol elimination, double doses of phenylbutazone accelerated this elimination to 160%.
