M. hapla susceptible (Grasslands Wairau) and M. hapla resistant (Nevada Synthetic XX ) cvs of lucerne were given either single or combined inoculations of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi and M. hapla. Mycorrhizal inoculation improved plant growth and reduced nematode numbers and adult development in roots in susceptible cvs with combined inoculation. Tolerance of plants to nematode infection and development was the same in plants preinfected with the fungi or where inoculation was simultaneous. Resistant plants were unaffected by nematode inoculation but growth of plants was improved and numbers of nematode juveniles were reduced following mycorrhizal inoculation.
