Female participation in mutual assistance groups in traditional Nigerian societies is a common phenomenon. This chapter traces the development of the cooperative movement in the country, with a special focus on agricultural cooperatives. The organizational strategy adopted by women is described and sources of funding are identified. Evidence highlights the potential contribution of cooperatives and women to development in agriculture, especially if both are supported by government policy.
