Effect of methylsulfoxyl (DMSO) on the cornea and the penetration of certain drugs into the anterior chamber of rabbits

On the basis of results of experiments on rabbits it was established that a 70 per cent aqueous solution of DMSO acts irritating on the conjunctiva and cornea. It bas also an anaesthetizing and slightly mydriatic action. A 70 per cent aqueous solution as an pilocarpin and atropin solvent caused a delay, weakening and shortening of action of these drugs, which - according to the authors - is connected with increased blood-flow in conjunctival vessels and with the lack of influence of DMSO of the corneal permeability.
