The Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP) was launched in 1978/79 in 2300 selected blocks all over India with the objective of taking families in the identified target groups above the poverty line and creating substantial additional opportunities for employment in rural areas. The article discusses the role of banks and some problems in implementing IRDP, especially the poor infrastructure in rural areas. It is concluded that, as the trustees of the community's financial resources, banks have a special responsibility to respond effectively to the emerging needs of the community in which they function and will have to gear themselves to meet the challenges of implementing this poverty eradication programme.
