Nine patients suffering common or classic migraine were studied; in all of them the attacks were very frequent (4/mo., at least) and severe and did not respond to the standard prophylactic treatment. By means of a double-blind, single cross-over technique, propranolol was found, at a dose of 160 mg daily (1 tablet of 40 mg every 6 h), to cause a statistically significant decrease of the frequency and severity of attacks; an evident placebo effect was not detectable.
