.beta.-Adrenergic blockade has become the main form of treatment of angina pectoris, but such treatment falls short of the ideal. A double-blind double-crossover trial compared oxyfedrine, propranolol and placebo on 30 outpatients; 18 patients completed the trial and are the subject of the preliminary report. Clinical assessments, patients' diaries of symptoms and ECG readings following graded exercise showed oxyfedrine to be effective in treating patients with angina pectoris, the efficacy being in many ways comparable with that of propranolol. The lack of serious side effects and a series of laboratory investigations showed oxyfedrine to be well tolerated and safe. Oxyfedrine is an effective and logical treatment for patients with angina pectoris, which deserves consideration as an alternative to .beta.-adrenergic blockade, and which is available to patients in whome .beta.-adrenergic blockade is contra-indicated.
