Listeria spp. in food of animal origin

Food samples of animal origin were analysed for Listeria spp. Strains were characterized using biochemical and serological tests. The rapid enrichment method using Palcam and Oxford agars enabled the 7 strains to be grown. Five L. innocua strains, 1 L. monocytogenes and 1 L. welshimeri strain were isolated from 208 samples of raw milk from farms. L. monocytogenes was isolated from milk of 1 cow with subclinical mastitis. No Listeria strains were isolated from pasteurized milk, chocolate milk or cheese, but 1 L. welshimeri strain was detected in ice cream. L. ivanovii was detected in 2.5% of meat product samples. Results are discussed with reference to sources of contamination in Argentina and the prevention of listeriosis.
