The purpose of this study was to clarify the mechanism of the displacement of diaphyseal insertions of tendons and ligaments in relation to the central part of the diaphysis, which takes place parallel to the growth of a tubular bone. Forty-seven rabbits were injected with 35S -sulphate and the activity of the radioisotope incorporated in the regions of insertions of three tendons (the pectineus, the patellar ligament and the pectoralis major) and two ligaments (the crural and the medial collateral ligament of the knee) during growth was followed by autoradiography. In addition, the formation of bone at the tendon-bone boundary of the insertion was studied by means of oxytetracycline. 35S -sulphate was incorporated in the tendinous tissue in the region of insertion but not in hone 1.6-24 hours after the administration of the radioisotope. Thereafter, radioactivity could be seen in the bone on the diaphyseal side of the insertion while faint activity persisted in the connective tissue of the insertion. Accordingly, two different processes were considered to be occuring simultaneously in the area of the insertion during growth: longitudinal growth of tendon which is proportional to the corresponding epiphyseal bone growth; and direct incorporation of newly formed tendinous tissue into bone.
