In trials involving 3 herds of pigs in which there were severe and continuous enteric disease problems in the piglets between 1 wk of age and weaning, vaccination of the sows with homologous, heterologous or autologous E. coli vaccine at 24-31, 10-17 and 3-10 days before farrowing significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the number of piglets subsequently requiring treatment for diarrhoea. Results from litters of sows vaccinated by the intramuscular or intramammary (through the side of the gland into the area of the lactiferous sinus) route did not differ significantly. The 3 types of vaccines appeared to be equally effective.
