Diarrhoea is common in piglets. However, the involvement of E. coli should not be overestimated. An optimum vaccination procedure has to meet the special immunological requirements of the maternal mammary gland and the intestine of the newborn. Natural infection induces immunity directed mainly against adhesive antigens. After artificial immunization, bacteriostatic and antitoxic mechanisms become effective as well. Due to the high cost, the 9 vaccines licensed in Switzerland have not yet been compared.
