A total of 127 strains of E. coli originated from diarrhea of suckling piglets in Taiwan was examined for resistance to 15 antibacterial agents. There was a tendency for such strains as these to show a multiple drug resistance, which finally reached a nine-drug resistance. This tendency seemed to put a severe restriction upon the selection of drugs effective for the control of diarrhea of piglets in the field. Furthermore, transferable R plasmid was detected from about one half of the drug-resistant strains. In addition, it had a marker of multiple drug resistance. As a result, it was anticipated that the use of drugs in the field would induce extensive transmission of such plasmid.
