Of 51 food isolates of E. coli, 45 showed resistance to antibiotics. Of the 45 strains, 49.1% showed resistnce to ampicillin, 5.8% to chloramphenicol, 7.8% to furazolidone, 29.4% to tetracycline, 15.6% to streptomycin, 52.9% to sulfadiazine and 47.1% to co-trimoxazole. The presence of R-plasmids was suggested by conjugation tests in 86.6% of these strains.
