Organochlorine insecticide residues in water, sediment, and organisms, Aransas Bay, Texas--September 1969--June 1970

Samples of water, sediment and eight types of organisms taken from Aransas Bay and other bays flowing into it at Rockport, Texas, were analysed to determine the distribution of residues of organochlorine insecticides. Such residues were detected in only three of the water samples and three of the sediment samples. Very small amounts of residues (less than 67 parts/109) were detected in eight of the 11 samples of organisms. The predominant residues in the organisms (which consisted of shrimps, oysters, crabs and fish) were dieldrin, p,p'DDD and p,p'DDE. The occurrence or concentration of the residues was not correlated with the salinity or pH of the water or the percentage organic content of the sediments.
