Organochlorine residues in starlings, 1972

In autumn 1972, starlings were collected from 130 sites in connection with the National Pesticides Monitoring Program. They were analyzed for DDT and its metabolites, dieldrin, heptachlor epoxide, BHC polychlorinated biphenyls and, for the first time in the series, oxychlordane [1a,2,3,4,5,6a,7,7-octachloro-1a,1b,5,5a,6,6a-hexahydro-2,5-methano-2H-indeno[1,2-b]oxirene] and hexachlorobenzene. Mean DDT and dieldrin residue levels have declined significantly since 1967 and a regression analysis suggests that levels of DDT and its metabolites should fall below a mean of 0.1 p.p.m. for the 1974 starling collection.
