Residues in food and feed; a study of the sources of insecticide residues in milk on dairy farms in Illinois--1971

12 dairy farms with milk dieldrin residues ranging from low to medium to high were selected from a total of 40 herds in Illinois surveyed on 2 Feb. 1971. Data are tabulated on dieldrin residues in milk samples collected from bulk tanks on each farm on 2 Feb., 17 March and 24 Sept. 1971, and analysed by GLC. Data are also presented on residues in feeds and soil samples from each farm. Milk samples from 5 farms contained >0.3 ppm dieldrin (fat basis); the highest value was 0.556 ppm. Significant levels of dieldrin were found in samples of hay (0.013-0.04 ppm), oat straw (0.012-0.051 ppm) and soya bean feeds (0.006-0.046 ppm); maize silage, commercial feed concentrates and water were not important sources of contamination. It was concluded that the chances of dieldrin residues in milk exceeding the recommended level of 0.3 ppm are greatest on dairy farms having a history of aldrin soil treatment within the last 6 or 7 yr.
